10 things you don’t want to hear at a church board meeting

December 27, 2008

There used to be a show on tv called Kids Say the Darndest Things. On the show kids said all manner of things that often shocked the audience. The kids spoke with honesty.
In our churches our members can say the darndest things. They speak with honesty. It is so important that we have all our ducks in a row so we don’t get caught without a plan.
Please tell me that you never ever heard any of these comments while conducting a meeting at your church.

1. Pastor, we can’t plan without your vision.

2. Pastor, we have ministry conflicts.

3. Pastor, don’t we need a master calendar?

4. Pastor, shouldn’t we have a plan to help our community?

5. Pastor, do we have to spend all that money sharing the gospel?

6. Pastor, we’re happy with the people we have in this church.

7. Pastor, our previous pastor didn’t do it like that.

8. Pastor, shouldn’t we allow each of our 20 ministries to present in detail all their plans for the next two year?

9. Pastor, do you have a plan or are we just practicing maintenance ministry?

10. Pastor, what are the goals we wish to accomplish for next year?

[AUDIO http://mcphaull.com/bens10/10%20reasons%20young%20pastors%20quit.mp3%5D

There are so many young pastors who have experienced issues in ministry that almost led so many to quit. I know many young pastors who have struggled with this issue. They have almost gone down this road. One thing that keeps them in ministry is the fear of what to do next.
Please share your thoughts on this matter. Many will grow from your thoughts and your journey.

1. Politics.

2. Backstabbing.

3. Haters.

4. Jealousy.

5. Insecure supervisors.

6. Maintenance ministry.

7. Lack of innovation.

8. There is no connection with the culture.

9. No clear vision.

10. Lack of professionalism.

It is extremely awkward to know that your preaching is not connecting.
I have had this problem. I found myself rushing through the sermon to get it over with.
Has this ever happened to you?
Let me know…

1. The ushers have to wipe up drool.

2. You have to ask the A/V team to turn up the mic.

3. You make a joke and only your wife laughs.

4. People are walking out during your sermon.

5. People say amen at inapropriate times.

6. People are looking at their watches.

7. You lose your train of thought and nobody notices.

8. During the potluck your overhear members talking negatively about your sermon.

9. People talk during your sermon.

10. You can feel it.
